We had an excellent week getting to know our students! We accomplished our goal of building a community within our classrooms and as a grade level. We did several getting to know you activities such as The Name Game, Teacher Memory Competition, surveys, and a snow ball fight!
We brought the entire grade together for daily read alouds that centered around honesty, bullying, and inclusion. The students wrote us a letter telling about themselves, and ended the week by sharing their "All About Me" posters.
The fourth graders were introduced to punch cards and paper clip chains. Students earn punches as an individual incentive for showing positive behavior in class. The homerooms can earn paper clips by working together as a team to meet class expectations.
In Science, students completed a survey of various questions and collected dataabout their homeroom. We discussed process skills that scientists use when they are experimenting, and will continue to use these throughout the year in class.
In Math, students were introduced to mental math strategies and took a pre-assessment for their multiplication facts. This week they will begin multiplication boot camp!
In Reading, we established independent reading guidelines and students began reading a novel of their choice. We look forward to beginning a class novel, The War With Grandpa. Students will practice monitoring comprehension, and tracking their thoughts as they read.
In Social Studies, students created a graphic organizer that will be used to collect their thoughts and visions of a "trip across the United States." This unit is an overview of landforms from coast to coast.
Spelling and Language Arts will be introduced to students this week.
Here's to a great start to a successful school year!
