August 18-22

This week the fourth grade: 

• Analyzed patterns and identified rules to solve number patterns
• Discussed the process skills that scientists use when experimenting
• Collected  information about classmates and created a graph to represent the data
• Connected the morals in The Fabled Fourth Graders of Aesop Elementary School to their own classrooms 
• Reviewed the meanings of our spelling words to prepare for Wordly Wise next week
• Took their first spelling test
• Established and practiced independent reading procedures
• Practiced creative writing with BINGO journal prompts
• Brainstormed for ideas for their first writing project: A School Story
• Began our study of Missouri with "Missouri Mondays"
• Created a foldable book to outline information about their first region of study: The Northeast

Next week we will:

• Review the four types of sentences and correct sentence punctuation
• Identify the subject and predicate of sentences
• Continue to practice scientific process skills  
• Review important parts of story to help them understand what they are reading
• Begin a class novel, The School Story by Andrew Clements
• Write rough draft of first writing project: A School Story
• Review patterns and wrap up Topic 2 in Math with a test on Friday
• Identify features related to the geography and economy of the Northeast region of the U.S.

• Friday, 8/29:  Math Topic 2 Test (study guide will be given in class as well as class periods to review content)

• Friday, 9/5:  Family Fun Fest!
• Tuesday, 9/16:  Picture Day
• Thursday, 9/18:  Informational Book Club Meeting for parents, 3:45 pm in Mrs. Van Maren's classroom
• Friday, 9/19:  Mid-quarter, Pet Blessing chapel
• Wednesday, 9/24:  Noon dismissal for faculty professional development
• Friday, 9/26:  Spirit Day, 4th Grade Book Clubs, 12:30-1:00

On the days that your child has P.E., please have them wear (or bring to school) appropriate shoes so they can fully participate. Due to safety concerns, your child will not be able to participate if they do not have safe shoes on. Examples of shoes that are not appropriate: Sandals, Crocs, flip-flops, boots with heels, shoes with wheels. All shoes must have skid resistant soles, cover the entire foot and be properly secured to the foot.
