September 7 - 11

This week the fourth grade: 

• Practiced spelling words and took a test on Friday 
• The words are always from our wordly wise lessons.  This week it will be Lesson 2
• Identified specific parts of a sentence, including subject nouns, verbs, and adverbs
• Began Topic 4 in math, addition and subtraction of whole numbers
• Began a unit all about matter, including measurement
• Experimented with corn starch and water to see when it is mixed if it is a solid or a liquid
• Finished reading The School Story
• Studied Missouri's climate and resources
• Explored the Growth of the Northeast region and what the region is like today
• Reviewed the states and capitals of the Northeast
• Edited and revised our tall tales and also give constructive feedback to our peers
• Continued our work on wpponline.com

Next week we will:

• Read Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner and practice writing daily journal entries as we prepare for our first book club
• Continue Topic 4 in math as we estimate sums and differences and add and subtract whole numbers
• Review and take a test on the Northeast region of the United States (test Wednesday!)
• Begin publishing the final copy of our tall tales
• Continue our work on wpponline.com
• Continue our discussion of Ellis Island its role in immigration (If your family has a personal history tied to Ellis Island, please share with your student! We will have some time for sharing on Thursday.)
• Discuss and practice a variety of ways scientists measure matter including mass and volume
• Review wordly wise answers throughout the week to build understanding of word meanings for the test on Friday
• Practice writing sentences following the Shurley Grammar guidelines using a subject noun, verb, and adverbs

• Friday, 9/25:  4th Grade Book Clubs, 12:30-1:00
• Friday - Sunday, 9/25 - 9/27: Visit St. Paul's Booth at the Plaza Art Fair!

Books Clubs are a favorite in fourth grade!

If you are interested in hosting a book club, please let us know your preference so we can put you on the list.  If you can host a group for first or second quarter, please try to come to our meeting on Thursday to get more information!
