January 19-22

This week the fourth grade: 
  • Continued reading Number the Stars
  • Began Topic 10 in math and practiced long division
  • Wrote comparison poems using similes and metaphors
  • Compared and contrasted two volcanoes of the West: Mt. Kilauea of Hawaii and Mt. St. Helens of Washington
  • Explored the products and natural resources of the West
  • Wrote for a purpose (to persuade, entertain, or inform) on WPP Online
  • Spelling plural nouns
  • Identified possessive nouns and learn how use apostrophes to spell possessive nouns
  • Made connections between nouns and pronouns in sentences
  • Began learning about earthquakes 
Next week we will:
  • Build models of buildings to test on an earthquake table
  • Review layers of the Earth and earthquakes for our test on Thursday
  • Review identifying nouns, forming plurals and possessive nouns for our test on Friday
  • Finish reading Number the Stars
  • Choose third quarter books clubs and take the Scholastic Reading Inventory
  • Publish winter comparison poems
  • Continue long division practice with games and strategies to help the students master this concept
  • Explore the culture of the West
  • Begin an infographic project on The West
  • Review the states and capitals of the West in preparation for our test on Thursday, February 4th
  • Learn about the War of 1812 and how The Star Spangled Banner was written

    • Students have been given a study guide
  • Friday, 1/29:  Nouns test
  • Tuesday, 2/2:  Math Club, 7:30 am in Mrs. Stephenson's classroom

  • Friday, 2/5:  Book Clubs, 12:30-1:00
  • Tuesday, 2/10:  Science Club, 7:30 am in Mrs. Van Maren's classroom
  • Friday, 2/12:  Book Clubs, 12:30-1:00, Valentine's Day parties 2:30 pm
  • Monday, 2/15:  No School, Presidents' Day
  • Thursday, 2/18:  4th Grade Showcase, 7 pm
  • Thursday, 3/3 and Friday 3/4:  Parent Teacher Conferences
  • Friday, 3/11:  End of Quarter 3
