May 9-13

This week the fourth grade: 
  • Began our science unit all about electricity
  • Observed how charged objects behave
  • Experimented with static electricity using balloons, salt, and pepper
  • Classified helping verbs in sentences with a focus on interrogative sentences and helping verbs
  • Reviewed the eight parts of speech we have learned about so far:  nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions, and interjections
  • Wrote practice sentences with different helping verbs
  • Practiced all 50 states and capitals in a variety of ways in preparation for a states and capitals test on Thursday, May 19
  • Explored how the Missouri constitution protects our rights
  • Learned about the importance of farming and manufacturing in Missouri
  • Wrote a narrative based on the book, I Didn't Do My Homework Because by Davide Cali
  • Continued reading The Sign of the Beaver and Walt Disney
  • Compared and ordered decimals
  • Made connections with decimals and money
  • Showed what we have learned from the Kansas City Ballet with our ROAD Rally on Friday
  • Students were given a consent form to participate in a research project led by Mr. Christensen, a preschool teacher who is working on his Masters in Education.  Please read this form and have your child bring it back to school no later than Tuesday, May 17th.  We need these forms returned to determine which students will participate in his project.
Next week we will:
  • Review Topic 13 (fraction and decimal concepts) and take a test on Wednesday
  • Build simple circuits, series and parallel circuits
  • Conduct tests to see how electrical energy changes with battery power and amount of lightbulbs
  • Test a variety of objects to identify conductors and insulators
  • Classify parts of speech in sentences
  • Identify sentences with inverted word order
  • Finish reading The Sign of the Beaver and Walt Disney
  • Finish our I Didn't Do My Homework Because Narratives
  • Use images to write creatively
  • Take a test over the capitals of the 50 states on Thursday
  • Explore recreation in Missouri including its state parks, historic sites, and museums
  • Learn about some famous Missourians including politicians, artists, and musicians

Upcoming dates:
  • Wednesday, 5/18:  Math test over Fractions and Decimals
  • Thursday, 5/19: Social Studies States and Capitals Test
  • Tuesday, 5/24:  Field Day!
    • Parent activities on field will be from 11:00-11:30
    • Grades 3-5 will enjoy lunch on the field from 11:30-12:00.  Parents are welcome to stay for lunch with us!
    • 8th grade softball game will be at 2:30 on the field
  • Wednesday, 5/25:  Electricity Test in science class
  • Thursday, 5/26:  Last Day of school
    • This year grades 3-5 will go to Ward Parkway Lanes to bowl.  Students are allowed to bring no more than $4 to purchase a drink and popcorn while we are there.  We will return and have lunches in our classrooms or outside depending on the weather.
