September 23-27

This week the fourth grade: 
  • Continued our study on the Northeast Region, working on our scrapbook pages
    • The Northeast States and Capitals Test will be Thursday October 3rd. 
  • Took a test over Topic 2 in Math, Patterns and Number Relationships
  • Reviewed place values of numbers
  • Wrote numbers in standard, expanded, and word form
  • Read Stone Fox as a class to model our book club reading process
  • Practiced daily journal writing for reading assignments
  • Discussed physical and behavioral adaptations animals have to help them survive in their environments
  • Took a quiz over ecosystems
  • Took a quiz over subjects and predicates 
  • Reviewed rules for capitalization
Next week we will:
  • Identify place value relationships by comparing and ordering numbers
  • Practice rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand
  • Review abbreviations and capitalization rules
  • Begin learning appropriate uses for commas in sentences
  • Investigate how changes in an ecosystem affect the organisms living there
  • Learn how energy flows in an ecosystem
  • Differentiate between producers and three types of consumers
  • Begin reading for book clubs and use daily journal writing about what students read in their book
  • Participate in our first book club meeting!
  • Finish their final draft for the Grown Up Rule paper
  • Complete our unit on the Northeast Region and take a test
    • Students will be required to locate the state on a blank map, identify the capital city and Postal code.
  • Introduce the unit on the Southeast Region
Upcoming dates:
  • Thursday 10/3: Social Studies Test - The Northeast Region states and capitals
  • Friday 10/4:  Buddy Run, 9:00 am, First Book Club meeting for students!
  • Thursday 10/10:  First Science Club Meeting, 7:25 am in Mrs. Van Maren's classroom
    • Students must arrive on time to be able to participate in activities
  • Thursday 10/10:  Topic 3 Test, Math
  • Friday 10/11:  Book Club meeting 12:30-1:00
  • Monday 10/14:  NO SCHOOL, Professional Development
  • Thursday 10/17:  First Math Club Meeting, 7:20 am in Mrs. Van Maren's classroom
    • This first meeting is hosted by Mrs. Van Maren since Mrs. Cowan has not yet returned from her maternity leave.
  • Friday 10/18:  End of Quarter 1, Spirit Day, Final Book Club meeting
  • Wednesday 10/23:  Topic 4 Test, Math
  • Thursday 10/24:  Conferences, 12:00 pm-8:00 pm
  • Friday 10/25:  Conferences, 8:00 am-12:00 pm

Book Club Dates for the school year
Quarter 1:  October 4, 11, 18
Quarter 2:  December 6, 13, 20
Quarter 3:  February 7, 14, 21
Quarter 4:  April 4, 11, and 21.  (Note the last meeting in this group will have to meet on a  Monday instead of Friday due to Good Friday)
